Apple Pickin’ Fun – Our Trip to the Orchard Plus a Recipe Round Up

  • life & love & littlesrecipe round up
  • Happy First Day of Fall! This is my absolute favorite time year. It’s cool and crisp in the morning, but still sunny and warm in the afternoon. Just trying to soooooak it all up before we’re under a foot of snow here in Kansas City.Apple Orchard Photos

Oh, does that sound like an exaggeration? Three winters ago, just a few weeks after Tinsley was born, it snowed over a foot in a day here…..TWICE!…..with in about 9 days. Which was great because Chris got to take off a day of work and stay home with me and the new born babe. But other than that, snow me-no-likie. Oh yeah, back to fall! It’s my favorite. Kids at the apple orchard

We’re trying to do lots things as a family of 3 before the new baby gets here in a few short weeks. I think it kind of hit me yesterday because I hit the 30 week mark, which means I have only 10 weeks left! I’m getting so excited to meet this new little babe, but I also realize that these fun outings will become much more difficult with 2 kiddos. Outings like a family trip to the apple orchard. We have several local orchards in the area, but we went to the Cider Hill Family Orchard in Kansas City. It was so fun! Daddy and daughter at apple orchard

A tractor pulls their apple wagon straight out to the orchard where they tell you which trees to pick from and what apple varieties are ripe for the pickin’. On this trip to the orchard, the ripe apple varieties were smoothie apples, and golden delicious apples. Pregnancy Apple orchard photo shoot

Golden delicious are one of my favorite apple varieties because they are great for cooking and baking with. I had never tried the smoothie apples before this outing, but they were great! We were told they are great for cooking with and just yummy to eat. Tins 1Tinsley obviously like both kinds. Every time I turned around, she had another apple in her mouth. I’m still not sure how she didn’t get sick! Apple orchard photo shoot

So for all of you out there that are apple pickin’ this time of year too, I thought I would put together a short little round up of apple recipes for you. I mean, the worst thing would be for you to pick and buy all of those fresh, delicious apples, and then have them just sit on your kitchen counter until they go bad. Let’s not let that happen. So who’s ready for some apple recipes? Apple orchard photo shoot

For this apple recipe round up, I’ve just chosen a few of my favorites.

If you are looking for a delicious breakfast option, try this filling Apple Pie Oatmeal with Peanut Butter. Pie? I know, sounds unhealthy, but it’s anything but! There’s no added sugar, just the sweetness from the apple. I actually had this for breakfast this morning. And if you or your kiddos are allergic to peanuts, this is wonderful with sunflower butter instead! Mmmmm I might make this for lunch too! Apple Pie Oatmeal with peanut butter

I made this Apple Pecan Corn Bread Stuffing with Dried Cherries again earlier this week, at husband’s request. And believe me when I tell you, this recipe is worth the carbs! There are several ways you can change this recipe up to fit what you have in your pantry and make life easier. Swap the dried cherries out for cranberries or Craisins. Swap the pecans out for walnuts or hazelnuts. Either way, get ready for your house to smell like Thanksgiving, and your belly to be all warm and happy! Apple Pecan Stuffing with Dried Cherries

Speaking of Thanksgiving, if you’ve already started stock piling recipes for the holidays, don’t leave out my Sweet Potato, Apple and Cranberry Hash. I’m telling you, this one is a winner. And it’s just pretty. And since we “eat with our eyes first” that has to count for something, right? Sweet Potato Apple and Cranberry Hash

And if you’re looking for a well rounded dinner idea, this Lemon and Thyme Pork Tenderloin with Sautéed Apples recipe is it! It’s sweet & savory, healthy, filling, and great for entertaining. Oh, you don’t like sharing your food either? That’s ok, you can keep the leftovers for your self. Hey, I’m pregnant, so no judgement here! Bills SpreadsheetSo there you go. A few new apple recipes to try! You really can’t go wrong with any of them. So get out there and pick something, and enjoy this fall weather. And then make something tasty with the fruits of your labor. We’re sure enjoying ours.
